Construction Update
May 2011 Update
The campus construction is moving forward despite the ever-present rainy weather. Much of the work has moved indoors, and the SEA classrooms and laboratory spaces are almost complete. Work continues on the outside of Wright Hall, the former medical building on the Navy campus; copper and wooden siding will highlight this new laboratory and office space.
Landscaping will begin as soon as the grounds are ready. The plans are set and the plants are on order. The finished campus will have more green space and less asphalt than the former Navy base and walking trails will make it very pedestrian-friendly.
The Rockefeller Building plans are on track to be approved by the National Park Service, the Maine State Historic Preservation Office, and the ADA folks. Once approved, the design will be put out to bid and work will begin as soon as possible. The building will become a welcome center and include a small conference space, staff offices, and lodging.
The new gatehouse at the entrance to SERC is almost ready. It will have a year-round restroom open to the public. It will be staffed by volunteers this summer.
There will be a grand reopening celebration on August 24 and a community open house with activities for families will be held on August 27.
November 2010 Update
The construction on the SERC campus is now about 42% complete. Much of the underground utility work is finished. The lighting bases have been installed in the parking lots and along the roadways, and in early November the three major roads will have received their first coating of pavement in order to make winter maintenance easier. The remaining paving on those roads, and on the other surfaces, will be done in spring 2011. There is a new building at the entrance to the campus and it should be completed in December 2010. This will serve as the new gatehouse and will have bathrooms that are open year-round. Eliot Hall also will be completed this December and Wright Hall in April 2011. Work will begin on Dorr Hall in December and it is slated for completion in March 2011. The plans for the renovations of the Rockefeller Building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, are awaiting approval.
The majority of the campus renovations will be completed by the end of the summer of 2011. There will be a grand reopening of the campus in August 2011
