About Schoodic Education and Research Center Institute

The Schoodic Education and Research Center Institute, or SERC Institute, was created in 2004 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Schoodic Education and Research Center of Acadia National Park. The Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC) is one of 19 research learning centers located at national parks across the United States, and is the largest of all these facilities. SERC is located in Acadia National Park and is dedicated to supporting scientific research in the park and throughout the region, providing professional development for teachers, and educating students to become a new generation of stewards who will help conserve our natural and cultural treasures.

SERC is co-managed by the National Park Service and SERC Institute.

The mission of SERC Institute is to guide present and future generations to greater understanding and respect for nature by providing research and learning opportunities through its outstanding Acadia National Park setting, unique coastal Maine facilities, and innovative partnership programs.

We bring private money together with public resources to support scientific research and education. Our activities include:

  • Three AM
    Friday, June 21, 2013 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm

    SERC Special Event: Exhibition Opening and Meet the Artist Reception

    George Wardlaw presents Cycles: Time-Light-Life, eight paintings of the 24-hour summer solstice, painted in Ogunquit in three-hour intervals beginning at 3 am on the solstice. Times of day are indicated by the quality of light and the rotation of each painting. Join the artist from 5 - 7 pm at Moore Auditorium on the SERC campus to celebrate the solstice with art, music, poetry, and images. Open to the public and free of charge. The exhibition will be on display at Moore through Labor Day.
